Creek, DPM exposure has been reduced by enhanced ventilation, cleaner engine technology and exhaust  ltration, enclosed and environmentally controlled cabs, and the availability of respirators to workers. Reducing lead exposure in the Lucky Friday mill is also a priority. Annual blood tests measure employee exposure, which is minimized through personal hygiene training and state-of-the-art respirators.
PROMOTING HEALTHY LIFESTYLES Our responsibility to ensure a safe workplace extends to providing opportunities for employee wellness. Greens Creek’s wellness program is a combination of mandatory core elements and optional programs that cover education, health interventions, and disease management. Fitness equipment is available at Greens Creek and our corporate o ce,
and  nancial assistance toward membership to a local  tness club is available to all Lucky Friday and Greens Creek employees.
Many employees bene t from a variety of health and wellness programs in the company. Health screenings are provided at the corporate o ce, Greens Creek, and Lucky Friday. In addition, employees at all sites are provided with free  u shots. On-site mammograms are available to North Idaho employees and spouses.
COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELLNESS Hecla recognizes that we are part of the local community in which we operate. A number of our employees are involved with community health and safety programs.  ey use skills and training received
in the workplace to assist their neighbors in the local community.  e occupational health nurse at Greens Creek provided  rst-aid training to local Boy and Girl Scouts in 2010. Eight employees from Lucky Friday are volunteer  remen in the town of Mullan, Idaho. Annually, we support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation golf tournament through participation and donations. In October 2010, over 75 “Team Hecla” participants and their families took part in the 2010 Walk to Defeat ALS in Coeur d’Alene, raising a total of $26,323 in support of 270 local ALS patients.

MINE RESCUE AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE
While we work hard to prevent our mine rescue personnel from being called into action, we’re grateful for their dedication and service. Both Greens Creek’s and Lucky Friday’s competition teams are trained to perform under the stress of an emergency. Competing against teams from companies across the country, the Greens Creek Underground Rescue competition team was district champion in 2010; its Surface Rescue team placed third at the 2010 Safety Olympiad in Elko, Nevada.
 e Lucky Friday mine has 25 team members who train at
least  ve times a year in  rst aid, rope rescue, and  re ghting.  e competition team placed third in the district competition and  rst in the team technician competition. At nationals in 2010, the team placed seventh overall out of 38, setting a new record for the district.
