Brother Claude Lane holds Mary, the Teacher on the steps of the cemetery chapel at Mount Angel Abbey. Completed by Lane in 2004, the icon depicts the Virgin Mary, together with Claude Newman, as they appeared in a vision to
a condemned prisoner awaiting execution in a Vicksburg, Mississippi electric chair in 1944. Two months earlier, Newman himself was put to death in the same electric chair. “ e Miraculous Conversion Story of the Prisoner Claude Newman” is the only rst-person account of Newman’s story – and of the unnamed prisoner’s vision – told by Father Robert O’Leary, who was directly involved with the events, and who has also le an audio recording of his experience. To this day, none has come forward challenging the story’s veracity.
