Beth Johnson, 30 student
Beth rst visited Lady Luck when she was 18 – and left with a tree frog tattooed on her back. Her parents
promptly kicked her out of the house. When her brother died unexpectedly last June, Beth wanted a tattoo to
remember him by. She’s proud of the work, but knows she has to hide it if she expects to get a real job. “You’re either
a tattooed person or you’re a professional; employers don’t think you can be both.”

Dave Hill, 51
chef and business owner
“As a chef,” Dave says, “there’s an art aspect to cooking. You never send out anything on a plain white plate. It
should look nice. And here I was, living my entire life as a plain white plate. So I added a little garnish.” Of course, his
little garnish quickly became more like a side dish. “Once you get past the point of saying it’s okay to embellish your
body,” he says, “you don’t want to stop at one.”
