Writer’s Notes
Hidden among the grande dames of Sumner Avenue lies a Miesian masterpiece. A couple blocks south of the neo-Gothic Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is a church with a fourteen-foot-
tall wall of glass. Tucked into a neighborhood just off of 29th Avenue is a home designed by Richard Neutra. And a few steps from the entrance to Kirtland Cutter’s Glover Mansion is one of the city’s more noteworthy examples of Modernism: Moritz Kundig’s Unitarian Church.
It’s all a bit staggering, really – a burst of creativity rivaling anything in Seattle during the same period, according to state architectural historian Michael Houser. A
small community of like-minded individuals took huge risks, pushing the architectural envelope in a city that didn’t exactly embrace their ideas.
Thankfully, there are some folks who generously gave of their time and resources to ensure we don’t forget. In addition to Steve Clark, whose guidance, wisdom, and support were absolutely critical
in the development of this issue of PROOF!, I’d like to thank John Abell, Harold Balazs, Bill Brooks, Evelyn Creager, Mark Dailey, Walt and Patty Davis, Denise Garceau, Terri McRae Garrett, Joe Hensley, Marcine Herron, Michael Houser, Tom Kundig, Marty Orchard, Ellen Robey, Ron Sims, Don Trail, and Bill Trogdon. And, of course, Moritz Kundig, who, despite a lifelong aversion to self-promotion, somewhat reluctantly agreed to share with a complete stranger a glimpse into his remarkable life.

PROOF! no. 3, published spring 2009, took a look at the art of tattooist Kristi Kilbourne, owner of Lady Luck Tattoo in Spokane Valley – and revealed that (surprise!) not everyone with a tattoo is a felon or a carnie.
