Creative Director’s Notes
It was in a conversation with Craig Sweat last fall that Gary Kaemmer’s name rst came up as a potential subject for PROOF!. Craig, who is Kaemmer’s second cousin, showed me a 1960s-era poster promoting Aspen as a ski destination. The illustration
– one of Kaemmer’s early works – caught my attention; when Craig told me about Kaemmer’s career as a commercial illustrator and his current work on the Famous Artists Portraits series, I was hooked. Time for a road trip to North Idaho.
While we spent most of a Saturday talking with Kaemmer, visiting his small studio,
and looking through his paintings, drawings, and illustration work, I knew the moment I met him that we had our subject. We just had to convince him, which wasn’t nearly as easy as it sounds. Reluctantly, he agreed to participate, and I’m glad he did. Gary Kaemmer is not only extremely talented, he’s refreshingly honest – and a delightful man.
We couldn’t have done this without Craig, who not only alerted me to yet another hidden talent, but also served as photographer on the project.

What makes Roy Lichtenstein (1923–70) famous? “Hype. Emotion. Rap. All of the above,” says Kaemmer. “The Warhols and Lichtensteins, that’s how they make it. Exposure, exposure, exposure.”
When you think of Modern architecture, chances are you don’t think of Spokane. Yet what architects were doing here in the 1950s and 60s rivals anything that was going on elsewhere in the Paci c Northwest. PROOF! no. 4, named Best
of Division at the 2010 Inland Northwest ADDY® Awards, introduces readers to architect Moritz Kundig and his contemporaries – and shows how, together, they changed the face of Spokane architecture.
