After the dust had settled, the applications scrutinized, the candidates’ merits discussed and argued over, and the voting tallied, one thing became abundantly clear: there cannot, it turns out, be only one. In fact, there were three winners of the 2017-18 Helveticahaus scholarship, awarded annually to select students earning graphic design degrees at Spokane Falls Community College. Jaydra Erchul-Johnson collected $1,000, while Teresa Mendoza Embrey and Jill Poland took home $500 each. The scholarship is funded by proceeds from sales of Helvetica-themed and -inspired products at Helveticahaus, an online retailer founded by CK and Linda Anderson in 2015. Seeking to give back to the design profession in a creative and meaningful way, the two were able to award the first scholarship just a year after launching the business. Criteria for the scholarship include need, work ethic, and design excellence.
