More than half a million small businesses have vanished from the American landscape since World War II – making Bouten Construction Company’s recent 75th anniversary a remarkable achievement on its own terms. But when you consider that the third-generation company still has relationships with clients dating back to those first years, it’s even more impressive. To help mark the occasion, Bouten came to long-time collaborator helveticka for help in developing an experiential design component to the Spokane-based construction company’s brand-new headquarters, completed in September. Using historic imagery from Bouten’s extensive archives, the helveticka team created wall-sized photographic murals, a milestones wall featuring laser-cut dimensional elements, and, throughout the building, project photography printed directly on aluminum panels. In addition, a supporting narrative – in the form of biography, client testimonials, and historical anecdotes – recounts Bouten’s history. Thanks to the work, said president Bill Bouten, “we are reminded daily about the people and projects that have made us who we are today.”
