Featuring one of only a dozen 200-meter indoor banked tracks in the United States, The Podium, designed by Integrus Architecture, is a 135,000-square-foot, 4,000-seat multisport venue built to showcase as many as 16 different sports. Working with the architects and the Spokane Public Facilities District, which owns and operates The Podium, helveticka created not only the name, tagline, and logo for the facility, but also a signage and wayfinding program and experiential graphics – including a 250-foot wall mural. A number of challenges surfaced during the project: The Podium’s siting near Spokane’s downtown core and adjacent to Riverfront Park meant that directional messaging for foot traffic was just as important as that for automobiles; the facility’s main concourse is longer than a football field – with five vomitories leading to the seating area within the field house; and the need to provide brand continuity across everything from directional markers to ADA signage to typography was paramount. The work was completed in time for the 2022 USATF Indoor Championships, held in February. Check out more project photos.
