For Hecla Mining Company’s 2018 annual report, the creative team developed the theme Responsible. Safe. Innovative. as a way of expressing Hecla’s transparent and open approach to mining. Last year marked a renewed commitment, wrote the company’s president and chief executive officer Phillips S. Baker, Jr. in his letter to shareholders, “to the safety of our people, to the protection of the environment, to continuous improvement through technological innovation.” The numbers back Baker up: a 63 percent decrease in Hecla’s All Injury Frequency Rate (well below the national average) over the past five years; 60 percent less diesel and 17 percent less energy used at its Greens Creek and Casa Berardi operations, respectively; and a pair of driverless haul trucks operating underground 24 hours a day – stopping only for fuel and maintenance. But it wasn’t just process that improved in 2018. Hecla set a number of records, including gold production and the highest reserves for silver, gold, and lead in its 128-year history. helveticka provided creative direction, design, writing, and production services for the annual report – its thirty-first consecutive AR for Hecla in a relationship that dates back to 1988.
