AW, F**K!
That was the reaction of helveticka’s own Shirlee Roberts-Downey when she realized she’d won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Spokane American Advertising Awards. We were mid-show, and Shirlee’s baby picture had just flashed on the big screen.
She was surprised to be only the eighth winner (including our firm’s cofounder, John Mraz) in 125 years, honored for countless contributions to the creative industry and wider community. Colleagues, collaborators, and clients all spoke to her superpowers in a tribute video we made to introduce Shirlee’s award, and this quote from Blaze Barrier CEO Jennifer Fanto sums it up:
“She shows up as her whole self and gives, and it’s really from this genuine place of caring about the community and the people she’s serving and not for any recognition.”
When the video ended, helveticka cofounder and principal CK Anderson took the stage and celebrated the talented and driven woman who has been his right hand in the design trenches for 26 years.
“I’m pretty sure there were plenty of times when she thought that she was the boss of me. Tonight however, Shirlee, you really are the boss,” CK said. “I’m delighted that you are receiving this very, very special honor. Congratulations. As the people in the video mentioned, this is well-deserved.”
Then Shirlee was passed the mic, and true to form, she kept it short. She thanked those who’d taught, guided, and supported her throughout her career – representing quite the lineup of old-guard greats. Hearing their words of appreciation and affection was a nice reminder of Spokane’s creative tradition and camaraderie.
Instead of sharing the wisdom of some famous designer, Shirlee quoted a gem from her brother Dean, who was in the audience with the rest of their family (who’d been snuck into the building for the occasion):
“When in doubt, add more throttle. It may not solve the situation, but it will end the suspense.”
Full-throttle is Shirlee’s only speed, and we salute her excellence. Special shoutout to iNid, Shirlee’s dearly departed tarantula who once ran amok in the helveticka offices. No doubt she’s just as proud as we are.
